Why can't I be happy?

Welcome to my latest mental health haiku reflections where I try to distil some of our common neurological ailments into 3 lines consisting of a total of 19 syllables.

Let me know if this one resonates.

I could be content,

Were it not for troublesome,

Thoughts gnawing my mind...

Thoughts can be incredibly useful, they can help to keep us safe, help us to communicate and help inspire us.

But they can also eat into us and leave us hollow and shattered if they are left to their own devices or taken too literally.

It can be very easy to identify ourselves with our thoughts and thought patterns and we do well to remind ourselves that we are not our next thought.

We are too cavalier with what we allow to cultivate in our minds. We know that if we eat too much junk food there will be consequences, we know that if we don't perform appropriate physical activity then our bodies will weaken...

But seldom do we consider that if we don't provide a healthy dose of mental nourishment to our minds then we will likely fall into unhealthy and unhelpful thought patterns.

Bitterness, resentment, jealously, despondency... to name a few.

Paying attention to the nature and pattern of our thoughts and then challenging them with the simple question, "Is this true?", is a great starting place to help avoid being swept away by the current of our minds.
